The PHP5 Dive

Dec 20, 2007
It's been a while since my original post on switching to PHP5, but it wasn't until recently that I finally started to move my current employer's website to a PHP5 server. I have to say I'm extremely pleased with the transition. When PHP5 first came out, I read several accounts of having to tweak all sorts of code mostly thanks to the modifications done to class/object handling in PHP5. Fortunately, all of my code was written for the cakePHP framework which natively supports both PHP4 and PHP5, so everything went over without a hitch. The only other PHP code on the site was an installation of phpBB and Gallery, both of which also transitioned fine.

In short, don't be afraid of PHP5 if you're still running 4. Just make the dive and you'll find everything will work out in the end. Once you've taken the dive, enjoy the new OOP features, exception handling, and more!
