Go PHP5

Jul 5, 2007
I was mucking around digg today and found an article about a few big PHP projects and web hosts switching to PHP 5.2 by February 5th, 2008. To me, this seems like a very good idea as I have been tossing around the idea of switching to PHP5 for quite some time. The unfortunate thing (as the website mentions) is that most code out there is written for PHP4 and the majority of shared hosts (my host, fortunately, gives you the choice) are still sticking with PHP4. There's really no reason why this site couldn't be written in PHP5, but as all my other projects I've created and am currently working on are in PHP4, adjusting could prove quite difficult. For me, the more PHP5 is pushed, the better. So please, go PHP5!

I'm moving my site over to PHP5 after I saw that PHP4 is not being supported as of the end of the year. It would be nice if I could do this from work but everything under the sun is blocked so another project for home.

Well if you want php 5 to become more used, one way would be to write all your projects in it ;) Besides you have to do it sooner or later, so what time is better than now? I am just waiting till a friend gets a dedicated server, which I will be sys admin of (wish me luck!) to change over.

Yes, after studying some of the new OOP stuff in PHP5 I have converted my new codexplorer.com system to PHP5. Of course, I don't think that you have to choose one or the other. You can easily build simple things to work with PHP 4 and 5. You can even find whole files that contain the PHP 5 functions that are missing in PHP4 (or as close as they get). My host (1and1.com) even lets you change which php processes the code based on the .htaccess settings.

I'm going to start moving this site over to PHP5 shortly. At work, the situation is a little more grim. We have a ton of code written for PHP4 that I have no idea whether it will run fine in PHP5. I guess there's only one way to find out, but I'm not so sure how easily I can convince my boss that spending more time/money to convert to PHP5 is worth it. We'll see how that goes...
